Students and Alumni Mentors Visit with Lead Anchor Alex Maragos ’09 at NBC Studios
On Wednesday, March 8, Loyola Academy’s Mentor and Leadership Development Program visited NBC studios in downtown Chicago. The group met with Alex Maragos '09, NBC’s morning and afternoon lead anchor, and toured the network’s studios and control rooms.
Alumni Relations Coordinator Ashley Sanks '10 was thrilled with the turnout of alumni mentors. “Although the mentors had to wait for students to arrive due to bad traffic into the city from Loyola, they stuck around to meet and chat with the group once we arrived,” she says. “The dedication that the alumni mentors have for this program is undeniable and that instance reaffirmed this.”
On the tour, Ramblers viewed the control room, the news and weather chasing trucks, the briefing room and the programming room, which monitors all of NBC’s affiliated channels.
“It was great to watch the 11:00 a.m. broadcast from the studio floor with Alex behind the desk,” says Sanks. “During the commercial breaks, he and his co-anchor Lauren Petty answered students questions. Loyola even got an on-air shout out at the end!”
During lunch, Maragos passed out NBC baseball caps and took photos with the students.
”I loved seeing the anchors live,” comments sophomore Eva Vitanovec. “It was amazing how they made no mistakes. Throughout the day, I enjoyed seeing the behind the scenes process. It is definitely a career I would want to pursue.”
