1999 Women's Basketball Team (2014)
The 1999 Women's Basketball Team had an incredible year. They finished the season with a 30-5 record. They were GCAC regular season and tournament champions for the fourth consecutive year. During those four years, they did not lose a single conference game. They claimed their fifth straight Regional title and fourth consecutive Sectional title. The team made a third straight visit to the IHSA quarterfinals in Bloomington where they lost at the buzzer in a hard- fought game. Overall, in four years, this group of seniors had a record of 126 wins and only 10 losses in varsity play. This record was achieved while playing one of the top schedules in the state, as well as competing in THE toughest Sectional in the state. The team was lead by an outstanding coaching staff of Head Coach Tanya Johnson and Assistant Coaches Mary Just, Kerri Durham, and Kathy Leyden-Brown. All-State players Olga Gvozdenovic and Laura Sobieszczyk led a senior-dominated group that had won the two previous state titles. The team was consistently ranked a Top 5 team all season. The high ranking gave them a target on their backs. They got every teamÕs best game. It is hard having to play your best night in and night out, but they did it. They got along on and off the court like no other team that has played here. They were like a family and that love translated to the court. They knew each otherÕs next moves better than they knew their own moves. They all had their roles and they accepted them without question. They were truly a team by every definition.
