LA Latin Team Takes North Region Title, Advances to State Tournament

There's really no such thing as a "home field advantage" when it comes to Latin competitions, just students in classrooms, answering tough questions on language, history, culture, and myth. But you might have wondered if you watched the performance of Loyola Academy's Lower Level (second-year) Certamen team at LA on Tuesday, February 6. Overcoming a narrow six-question regular-season deficit, the team took control in the first round and pressed ahead in rounds two and three to win the Northern Region Illinois Certamen League lower-level title and advance to the state tournament coming up this spring at North Side College Prep. There, they will compete against the champions of the five other Illinois regions.
"What our students accomplished is impressive," Coach Dr. William Lowe said. “The entire team is new to Certamen. It's their first year competing. And, facing the top students from some of the finest Classics programs in the state—North Side, New Trier, Evanston, Stevenson, and Carmel—they won."

LA's Novice (first-year) and Upper Level (third and fourth year) teams also performed well in the competition. The Novice team, coached by Mrs. Becki Wick, finished in fourth place, while the Upper Level team, coached by Mrs. Amanda Pagnotta, finished in fourth as well.
