Ramblers Celebrate Earth Day with the Annual Earth Day Fair
Loyola's annual Earth Day Fair, hosted by Student Council, took place Wednesday, April 17, in the East Gym. This year's fair presented Ramblers with new ways of approaching the environmental challenges that exist today. Faculty, staff, and students enjoyed interactive projects, skits by classmates, and more.
Philosophy Club returned with their "Environmental Therapy Booth" (a parody of Lucy Van Pelt's "Psychiatry Booth" from Peanuts). Women in STEAM created a fun game for Ramblers to practice sorting items into recycling, composting, or trash. During the second lunch period, Thespians shared skits they created to educate about sustainable choices. Irish Heritage Group educated students about shamrocks. Additionally, Student Council offered a variety of activities for students like creating seed bombs using seeds for native plants, seed planting, decorating reusable tote bags, rock painting, building bird feeders, and recycling basketball. Students were able to earn a free "dirt cup," made with pudding, Oreos, and gummy worms, by participating in three Earth Day Fair activities.
The Earth Day Fair has become an important part of spring activities at Loyola and aligns with the Academy's Jesuit values. Pope Francis emphasized the importance of protecting the environment in his encyclical letter "Laudato Si." In it, he calls us all to approach the care of our common home and the protection of God's creation as an expression of our faith.
In its commitment to sustainability, in recent years Loyola Academy has introduced a number of "green" initiatives including composting and two ChargePoint CT4020 EV charging stations for electric vehicles.
