Boys' Basketball Raises Awareness and Funds for Breast Cancer Research
On Friday, December 22, the boys’ varsity basketball team defeated Brother Rice 58–42 at home during a special celebration of LA Alumni Night. But the win and welcoming back alumni were not the only successes of the night—the game also increased awareness for stage four breast cancer and raised over $6,000 for the METAvivor Foundation.
“It was a great night of Catholic schools collaborating in service,” says Loyola Academy Athletic Director Mr. Pat Mahoney ’90.
Players from both Loyola and Brother Rice wore pink socks and pink warm up shirts as part of the fundraiser. During halftime, both teams went into the stands and collected money for a “miracle minute” and raised $1,800! A bake sale and generous donations from Loyola and Brother Rice fans during the game contributed to the $6,000 total.
“We held this event to raise awareness within our team, families and the communities of Loyola Academy and Brother Rice for stage four breast cancer,” says Head Boys’ Varsity Basketball Coach Tom Livatino. “Breast cancer touches so many families, and we thought it was important to educate our young men so they can be advocates for women in the future. Stage four breast cancer is tremendously under funded, and the Metavivor Foundation will apply 100-percent of our donation to stage four breast cancer research.”
A special thanks to Rambler moms Ms. Colleen Cassell and Mrs. Tonya Pemberton who played an important role in planning the event.
