LA Bar Luncheon Honors Justice Rochford and Eileen O'Neill Burke
On Wednesday, February 12, members of the LA Bar Association (LA Bar) gathered to honor Illinois Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth Rochford LdM '78 and Cook County State's Attorney Eileen O'Neill Burke, who also attended Marillac until her family moved midway through her junior year. Both shared insights on how Marillac shaped them and inspired their commitment to serving others in their legal careers.
The luncheon kicked off with a warm welcome from Director of Alumni Relations Ashley Sanks '10, followed by an opening prayer from Loyola Academy President Rev. Gregory J. Ostdiek, SJ. Joe Cook '97, chair of the LA Bar Steering Committee, shared some exciting updates on the group's direction and goals, and took a moment to recognize those who have served or are currently serving on the bench. Next, fellow LA Bar Steering Committee Member Hon. Michael Cabonargi '89 introduced the afternoon's first speaker, Illinois Supreme Court Justice Joy Cunningham, who graciously accepted the honor on behalf of Justice Rochford.
Justice Cunningham reflected on Justice Rochford's significant contributions to the Illinois Supreme Court, offering a colleague's perspective on the qualities—many shaped during her time at Marillac—that make her an outstanding Justice.
Joe Cook '97 returned to the stage to introduce Cook County State's Attorney Eileen O'Neill Burke who reflected on how her time at Marillac shaped her legal career. She spoke about the values instilled in her during those years and how they guided her commitment to service—ultimately leading her to a role where she works to protect the county's most vulnerable populations.
After lunch, attendees enjoyed lively conversation and a chance to connect with fellow Ramblers as they networked during a social hour.
