Dumbach Scholars Explore the Arts in Downtown Chicago

On Friday, September 29, Dumbach Great Art students took a field trip to downtown Chicago to explore the arts. Their trip began with a 90-minute river cruise to marvel at Chicago’s world-renowned architecture. Students were responsible for documenting buildings with pictures and information to create a collaborative visual documentation of the day.
"Experiencing the architectural river boat tour was one of the highlights of my field trip. Seeing the various topics that we learned in class related to present-day architecture was very interesting, and after the river boat tour we even got to see a parade pass us during lunch," said Gavin Pardilla '26.

After stopping for lunch, the group walked to the Art Institute of Chicago where students used the Goosechase app to complete a scavenger hunt to find artworks from Prehistory, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Etruria, and Rome. This exercise served as a review of the AP Art History curriculum so far and gave students a chance to see some of the Art Institute’s greatest exhibitions.

"My favorite part of the day was definitely spending time at the Art Institute. I love that I was able to connect what I learned in class to what I saw at the museum. I think it is unique how I can now go to the museum and see the artwork through a different perspective!" reflected Karolina Doroszkiewicz '25.

"I had a lot of fun on the Dumbach field trip. I loved being able to connect what we were learning in class to the artwork right in front of me at the Art Institute. Also, the Architectural Boat Tour really helped me see that there are a ton of really interesting buildings and styles that are so close to me," added Daphne Christopoulos '26.

The Dumbach Scholars Honors Program is an enrichment program designed to enhance the curriculum of Loyola's most gifted and motivated students. The program is grounded in small group Socratic discussions of humanities and arts topics. For more information, click here.
