Wellness and Mental Health-Related Resources

Loyola Academy views physical and mental health as integral to the intellectual and spiritual development of our students. Loyola’s counseling department is a recognized program by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), which empowers school counselors with the knowledge, skills and resources to promote student success in the school, the home, the community and the world.

  • Individual Counseling

    Loyola school counselors offer individual counseling to oversee their students’ growth in academic, personal/social and college/career domains over the course of four years.

    School counselors are responsible for responding to the immediate needs of students in crisis, whether due to medical, emotional or personal difficulty. While maintaining our professional obligation to confidentiality, counselors collaborate with parents, faculty, and outside clinicians to best support students during these times.   • Formation Program

    The Formation Program is designed to enhance Loyola Academy’s distinctive Jesuit mission and vision, to help form young women and men for meaningful lives of leadership and service within a diverse and committed community. The program and curriculum are aligned with the American School Counselor Association’s established mindsets and behaviors for student success, is recognized for its commitment to developing and delivering a comprehensive, data-driven program in accordance with the ASCA National Model. These classes are taught by their school counselor, whom they are with for all four years.

  • Counseling Drop In Center

    This is a calm, relaxing space for students to study, meet new friends, or speak with a counselor. Students have access to all counselors, not just their own. Counselors get a chance to get familiar with other students, allowing them to support all students in the building. Wellness Workshops are offered once a month with different topics related to mental health and coping techniques.

    The Counseling Drop In Center is open from during lunch periods everyday in Room 3 that there is not Animal Assisted Therapy.
  • Text-A-Tip

    This anonymous service allows students to text a local licensed/certified mental health professional who is on-call and can provide help 24/7. Simply text “LAHelp” and a confidential message to 1-844-823-5323. Click here for a Text-a-Tip fact sheet and watch this video for more information.
  • National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

    The Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones, and best practices for professionals in the United States.

    Beginning July 16, 2022, 988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
  • Support Groups

    Support groups offer students opportunities to learn practical skills for navigating daily life, encourage self-discovery and promote coping strategies as students identify and build upon their own strengths. Groups are confidential unless issues of harm to self or others arise.
  • Hope Squad

    Hope Squad is a school-based peer-to-peer program that empowers “squads” of students mentored by school counselors to take action to improve the school environment. Before a Hope Squad is implemented in a school, adult advisors attend training to prepare to serve in their role as mentor, supervisor and responder. Students are trained on how to recognize peers at risk for suicide, how not to keep a deadly secret and how to access immediate help from an adult.

  • Animal Assisted Therapy Program

    Research has shown that the benefits of spending time—even just five minutes—with a therapy dog is twofold: individuals exhibit both a decrease in the stress hormone cortisol and an increase in prolactin and oxytocin, the nurturing hormones. In addition, neurotransmitters that boost mood rise while blood pressure lowers.

  • Rosecrance

    Rosecrance offers comprehensive, individualized treatment for substance use and mental health disorders through residential treatment and outpatient programs.

  • Rosecrance Onsite Assessment Program

    Loyola Academy has partnered with Rosecrance, a provider of behavioral health services and addiction treatment programs, to provide an onsite counselor at Loyola Academy. Please visit the Counseling resource board tile for more information.
  • Signs of Suicide Prevention Program

    It is easy to misread depression as normal adolescent turmoil; however, depression (among the most common of mental illnesses) appears to be occurring at a much earlier age, and the past decade has seen teen suicide rates double. To proactively address this issue, Loyola Academy offers depression screening and suicide prevention training as part of the Signs of Suicide® Prevention Program (SOS) in our sophomore and senior formation curriculum.

  • Safety Reporting Form

    The health and well-being of all of our students and school community is of utmost importance. Concerns of any nature may reported to our Counseling Department or via our Safety Report Form. Comments are submitted anonymously, and all claims will be investigated.
  • Family Action Network

    Loyola Academy joined the Family Action Network (FAN) as a sponsoring partner in December 2019. FAN works to illuminate the human condition by convening expert speakers to launch community conversations. Its mission is to connect parents, students, educators, civic leaders, and professionals through collaborative programming that educates, inspires, and positively impacts the broader community.

  • Wilmette Police Department Social Services

    Students of Loyola may use the services of the counselor as well as our school resource officer at the Wilmette Police Department. The Counselor offers assessment, referral and short term counseling services to residents of Wilmette who are referred by the Police or other Village Departments. The Police Counselor is available for residents to call to obtain resource or referral information. The Counselor also assists victims and family members during crisis such as suicide, domestic violence and child abuse. Additional information is available here.
